Bala provided MEP/FP engineering design services for the Substation Replacement Project at Terminal B in the Logan International Airport.
This project involved the survey of existing normal power electrical distribution systems throughout Terminal B, Piers A and B. In an effort to increase electric service redundancy and reliability to Terminal B, Bala, as prime consultant, designed the replacement of four single-ended configuration Terminal B substations with four new double-ended configuration substations in an active airport terminal. The design involved doubling the area of each substation by expanding the existing substation envelops onto existing roof areas. The design included the separation of life-safety distribution systems from two of the substations with two-hour fire rated rooms within the new substations in order to meet current code requirements.
This project also included the design and specification of new boarding gate pre-conditioned air units and new 400 hertz ground power units for eight aircraft gate bridges to support aircraft operations when docked.
